Our Approach
As parents, we desire to nurture our children's overall well-being, supporting their emotional, social, and academic growth. Yet, some children struggle with managing their emotions, leading to challenges with anger, frustration, focus, impulsivity, and self-esteem. This is where somatic therapy comes in – a holistic approach that honors the intricate connection between mind and body. By acknowledging the body's innate wisdom, somatic therapy helps children cultivate greater self-awareness, emotional resilience, and harmony within.
Children's brains are uniquely wired, with areas responsible for emotional regulation, impulse control, and cognitive functioning still developing. Unlike adults, children's brains are more somatically oriented, meaning they process information and emotions through bodily sensations and experiences. This is why traditional talk therapy can be less effective for children – they may not have the cognitive ability to articulate their emotions or experiences. Somatic therapy, on the other hand, meets children where they are, engaging their natural inclination towards movement, play, and exploration.
Somatic (soma means body) therapy focuses on the connection between the mind and the body.
Somatic therapy recognizes that our bodies hold the memories of our experiences, influencing our behavior, emotions, and relationships. When children struggle with emotional regulation, it can manifest in their bodies as tension, anxiety, or restlessness. Nature-based somatic therapy offers a gentle, non-invasive approach to releasing stored tension and emotions, promoting relaxation, calmness, and balance. By immersing children in the natural world, we nurture their sense of connection to the land, their bodies, and their inner selves. By working with a trained therapist in a natural setting, your child can cultivate the skills and resilience needed to thrive in all aspects of life.
Nature based somatic therapy is a gentle and empowering approach.
3 PILLARS OF TIMBER CREEKS SOMATIC NATURE THERAPY PRACTICE
Nature as Co-Therapist
We believe that nature has the power to heal, inspire, and transform. By incorporating nature into our sessions, we invite the natural world to become a co-therapist, providing a unique and powerful catalyst for growth and healing. Nature's rhythms offer a calming and grounding influence, helping your child regulate their emotions, develop self-awareness, and cultivate a deeper sense of connection to themselves and the world around them.
Safety is Healing
In Timber Creeks nature therapy practice, we prioritize creating a safe space for your child to explore and express themselves. This means establishing clear boundaries, encouraging open communication, and fostering a sense of consistency. When children feel safe, they begin to trust themselves, their environment, and their therapist. This trust is the foundation upon which all healing takes place, allowing your child engage fully in the therapeutic process.
Evidence-Based Healing Practices
Timber Creeks nature therapy practice is rooted in evidence-based approaches, ensuring that your child receives the most effective and compassionate care possible. We draw upon established trauma informed models that best support the healing of nervous system dysregulation such as somatic experiencing, safe and sound protocol, and mindfulness-based interventions, adapting these approaches to meet the unique needs and circumstances of each child. By combining these with the transformative power of nature, we create a holistic and supportive environment that fosters lasting healing, growth, and resilience.
